CREATING A NEW BRAND IDENTITY FOR THE WRITING CENTER

PROJECT OVERVIEW
THE IDEA
The purpose of this project was to use branding to create a new identity for the SUU Writing Center. This process involved three main objectives: inventing a new brand identity, designing a book of guidelines for the brand, and implementing those guidelines into the Writing Center.


WHAT IS BRANDING?
Branding is a marketing practice that creates a memorable identity for an organization. A good brand has clear standards about the type of colors, fonts, photography and other visual elements that can be used in the brand. All these standards are then put into a book of guidelines called a "style guide".

STEP 1
FORMING THE BRAND IDENTITY
This project all began during my third year working as the marketing director the SUU Writing Center. Over the course of the that year, I began to slowly alter the visual identity of the Center by changing the fonts and colors on marketing materials. From there, it grew into a full blown branding shift as I implemented a new logo as well as new standards for photography, illustration, social media posts, and more.
STEP 2
CREATING THE STYLE GUIDE
After I had established the basic guidelines for the new brand, I needed to put it in a physical form that my boss could easily access. So, I decided to create a style guide in the form of a book. Creating the booklet was a design challenge in and of itself. I wanted the design of the guide to feel as sophisticated as the brand itself, so I used elements such as negative space, bright colors, and minimalism to give it a professional feel. STEP 3
IMPLEMENTING THE NEW BRAND
I implemented the brand by creating a variety of new marketing materials. Such materials include t-shirts, name tags, business cards, posters, and social media posts. However, implementing the style guide is a challenge that will be ongoing. Each new graphic designer that works at the writing center will have to adhere the guide or else everything will go back to the uncohesive thing it was before.
